Attendance Bus

Howe is considered a walking school which means that families are required to drive their children or walk their children to school each day. A need was discovered upon realizing some parents have other children in the home, have other family members using a car to get to work, or lack transportation as a whole. This caused attendance to be an issue. Howe Community Resource Center with the generosity of Schreiber eliminated this barrier by funding the Howe Attendance Bus. Now all students have a consistent, safe, dependable way to get to school. Since its inception, absences have dropped significantly and literacy and math scores have risen.

Basic Needs Assistance

HCRC provides clothing to the Howe Community School Caring Closet on an as-needed basis. Staff checks the closet weekly to ensure it is fully stocked for whatever needs may arise. HCRC provides winter gear, clothing, non-perishables, and hygiene items.

Every scholar at Howe has access to school supplies. We want each scholar to have all the tools they need to be successful as well as reduce that barrier for parents who may struggle to provide these items and prevent teachers from spending their own money.

Mental Health Services

Throughout the pandemic, there was an identified need for mental health support of Howe Families and students. Students were being placed on waitlists 12-18 months long. Thanks to the generosity of Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield we can provide this need for the students of Howe school. Our mental health professional works closely with the school administration, classroom teacher, and school social worker to provide the best treatment for the students. With this partnership, it reduces the cost barrier for parents on therapy and with us being next door is a more convenient/sustainable option for students.

Snack Program

We provide daily snacks for every classroom at Howe School. It was identified that having snack improves focus in the classroom and has reduced negative behavior. HCRC wanted to keep teachers from putting the burden on themselves of buying snack.
